HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR TEETH

Have you brushed your teeth? It’s something we’re used to hearing as kids – and for good reason. But there’s so much more to healthy teeth then daily brushing.

How long you’re brushing, how often you’re visiting the dentist, as well as flossing – these are all important and neglecting can have serious consequences.

So how can we help our teeth?

SEE YOUR DENTIST REGULARLY

You should never leave it any longer than 24 months between dental appointments.

But it’s best to get into a habit of visiting your dentist once every year. This is because if you have teeth or gum problems, if you leave it any longer you risk irreversible damage.

BRUSH THOROUGHLY

We all know that brushing twice per day, morning and night, is fine, but do you brush properly? On average, we only brush for 45 seconds each time, when it really should be done for two minutes to give the surfaces of our teeth a proper clean. Failing to do so can result in harmful bacteria building up on the surface.

DON’T FORGET TO FLOSS

A lot of decay and gum disease occurs between the teeth caused by food debris and the build-up of plaque, which is why flossing, is so important. Floss one a day to reach the places that your toothbrush can’t.

CHEW GUM IN BETWEEN MEALS

Chewing gum produces saliva, the tooth’s natural protection. Plague acid occurs when we eat as sugars come into contact with bacteria. This plaque damages the teeth and in time causes cavities. Saliva counteracts the plaque acid.

Finish with a mouthwash Gurgling a mouthwash prevents decay or the build-up of bacteria and plaque, but it shouldn’t be used in place of brushing your teeth.

CUT DOWN ON SUGAR

Limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks. Every time you sink your teeth into a sugary treat, the bacteria in your mouth react by creating acid, which causes tooth decay. Your teeth literally go under attack from the acid. If you are eating sugar during the day, make sure to chew gum to restore the natural balance of chemicals in your mouth.

WHITEN YOUR TEETH

You want to feel good about your smile. One of the most effective ways to do this is by having beautiful white teeth – we can help with this. Contact us if you’re unhappy with the colour of your teeth.
